About

Junior Thinkers Conference 2025

We are delighted to announce the AU & NZ Junior Thinkers Conferences for 2025! These inspiring events are designed for curious and gifted students to explore thought-provoking ideas across philosophy, science, and ethics, sparking ambition and a lifelong love of learning through meaningful discussions with their peers. The conference promotes interdisciplinary learning, encouraging students to think outside the box by engaging with the world of concepts and ideas.

Why Attend?

The Junior Thinkers Conference is a unique opportunity for students to step beyond the classroom and engage with big ideas that challenge their perspectives and inspire intellectual curiosity. By attending, students will:

  • Gain valuable insights from expert speakers across various fields.
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Build confidence in their ability to tackle complex issues and take responsibility for their own learning.

As one student from last year’s event reflected: “I left the conference feeling ready to take charge of my education and explore new ideas on my own.” Another student shared, “The conference taught me that learning doesn’t stop when you leave the classroom—it’s a lifelong journey.”

These events are designed to empower students to become independent thinkers, equipping them with the tools to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of knowledge and ideas.

2025 Programme Includes:

The conference will include four key sessions to provide a diverse and engaging learning experience:

  1. Philosophy Session: “The Big Questions”Explore fundamental philosophical questions such as “What is truth?” and “What makes a good life?” This session will encourage students to think deeply about the world around them and understand how philosophical insight can challenge assumptions, inspire change and reshape society.
  2. Community of Inquiry: “Freedom of Speech”This interactive session will invite students to engage in a structured discussion on one of the most debated topics of our time: freedom of speech. A community of inquiry is a friendly, collaborative conversation where students work together to reach a set of well-considered ideas. The goal is to help one another think creatively and critically, rather than score points or win arguments. The focus is on student-led discussion.
  3. Science Session: The Science of Time. What is time? Does Time really exist? Why does time seem to move in one direction? Is time travel scientifically possible? Why does time seem to pass faster or slower in different circumstances?
  4. Debate: Does Love Conquer All? Students will explore the timeless question of whether love has the power to overcome all obstacles or whether there are limits to its power. Is love always a transformative force that builds bridges and generates positive change or if misused, can it cause harm? All views are welcome, including historical, theological, philosophical and personal perspectives.

Session 1: Genetics, Epigenetics Transhumanism

A Thought Provoking Exploration of the Frontiers of Genetics

9:30

Recent breakthroughs, such as Elon Musk’s brain chip implant, are pushing the boundaries of what we once thought possible. Imagine a world where designing your child for enhanced intelligence and athleticism becomes a reality—questions arise: Could you? Should you?

As the manipulation of genetic matter becomes increasingly woven into the fabric of our world, influencing everything from embryo testing to the creation of new crops, understanding its nuances becomes imperative. Unravel the complexities of somatic cell engineering versus germ line engineering and grasp the profound impact it holds for modern scientific inquiry. In this enlightening session, we’ll explore the transformative potential of genetic manipulation and shed light on potential pitfalls that lie ahead. The talk will not shy away from ethical considerations, including the looming risk of a future genetic apartheid. Join us for a journey into the future, where genetics shapes the very essence of our existence, and ethical dilemmas await thoughtful consideration.

Session 2: Interactive Guided Community of Inquiry

The Task: The Ring of Gyges Challenge

10:30

Immerse yourself in a transformative group discussion session, designed specifically for more able and ambitious students! Using a timeless text from Plato, participants will engage in thought-provoking conversations with small groups from various schools, employing the dynamic Community of Inquiry approach. Each student will receive a concise excerpt along with stimulating questions, fostering lively discussions within their small groups. Through collaborative teamwork, participants will collectively formulate a set of ideas, emphasizing not only making quality contributions but also supporting their peers in the process.

Facilitated by dedicated staff members, the discussion will unfold before a shared plenary, exploring profound issues. Reflect on whether intelligence equates to justice and morality when not compelled, and ponder the role of government in legislating morality. To foster an inclusive and collaborative environment, students will be randomly assigned to teams that encompass a mix of ages and schools, promoting diversity and enriching the collective learning experience. A spokesperson will be elected within each group to present their collective conclusions and ideas. Join us in this intellectually stimulating experience, where students become active contributors to a rich tapestry of shared knowledge and insightful discourse.

All attendant staff will be appointed to a group and will need to help and encourage the discussion without leading it.
